Copper World Project Advances Toward Production in 2029
Hudbay Minerals Inc. and Mitsubishi Corporation have approved the construction and development of the Copper World copper project in Arizona, USA. Announced on October 21, 2026, the decision marks a major milestone for the project, with first production targeted for the second half of 2029.
Located approximately 50 kilometres southeast of Tucson, Arizona, Copper World is jointly owned by Hudbay Minerals, which holds a 70% interest, and Mitsubishi Corporation, which holds the remaining 30%.
Copper World Project HighlightsLocation: Arizona, United States
Project owners: Hudbay Minerals Inc. and Mitsubishi Corporation
Initial growth capital: Approximately US$2.07 billion
Targeted first production: Second half of 2029
Expected annual copper production: Approximately 102,000 tonnes during the first 10 years, according to Hudbay's feasibility study
The project is expected to strengthen the domestic copper supply chain in the United States. Growing demand associated with electrification, power infrastructure and data centre development is supporting continued investment in copper mining projects.
Mineral Processing and Copper ProductionCopper mining projects require suitable mineral processing strategies to recover valuable metals from mined ore. Ore grade, mineral composition, liberation characteristics and metallurgical performance all influence the selection and optimization of processing methods.
Copper World is planned as an open-pit mining operation producing copper concentrate, with gold and silver as by-products. The project also includes molybdenum concentrate production as part of its planned product portfolio.
As the project moves toward construction, mine development and processing plant preparation will be important steps toward its targeted production schedule.
Laboratory testing and mineral processing evaluation are valuable tools for understanding ore characteristics, assessing reagent performance and identifying suitable processing conditions. Actual reagent and equipment requirements depend on the mineralogy and metallurgical test results of each orebody.
Y&X provides flotation reagents and laboratory equipment for mining and mineral processing applications, supporting customers in laboratory testing and mineral beneficiation research.
